Heartbreak for Scotland as Hungary snatch Euro 2024 victory in dying seconds

Scotland crashed out of Euro 2024 in the most heart-wrenching fashion as Kevin Csoboth's 100th-minute winner earned Hungary a dramatic 2-1 victory.

The Scots had fought back from a goal down to level through Ryan Christie's penalty, but Csoboth's late strike broke their hearts and sent Hungary through to the knockout stages.

It was a cruel blow for Scotland, who had played with great spirit and determination throughout the tournament. They had come into the game needing a win to keep their hopes of qualifying alive, and they started brightly, with Christie and Lyndon Dykes both going close in the opening stages.

However, it was Hungary who took the lead against the run of play in the 24th minute. Roland Sallai's cross found Adam Szalai unmarked at the back post, and the striker made no mistake with a powerful header.

Scotland responded well to going behind, and they drew level just before half-time. Christie was brought down in the penalty area by Attila Szalai, and the Celtic midfielder coolly slotted home the spot-kick.

With the game heading into extra-time, it looked as though Scotland had done enough to earn a point. However, Hungary had other ideas. In the 100th minute, substitute Csoboth latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
